Become a Language Line Services Over-the-Phone Interpreter

What kind of work does an interpreter do?

Interpretation is the oral transmittal of a message from one language into another language. As an over-the-phone interpreter, you will listen to a limited English speaker, analyze the person’s message, and accurately convey its meaning to a Language Line Services client.

Each call is a three-way conversation between you as our interpreter, our client, and our client’s limited English speaking person. Speaking in the “first-person”, you will go back and forth speaking for our client as well as the person who has limited English skills.

On any particular call, you may be helping someone who is...

  • Calling 911 during an emergency,
  • Reporting an accident to their insurance company
  • Receiving instructions about completing a Medicaid form
  • Making a police report
  • Opening a checking account
  • Applying for a credit card
  • And so much more

Are you wondering if you have the skills to be an interpreter?

If you have native, or near native proficiency in English and a non-English language, good customer service skills, and good memory retention, we can teach you the rest.

Language Line Services provides interpretation services for a variety of clients including:

  • Emergency services
  • Health care

Interpreter Testimonials

"I would recommend [Language Line Services] to friends because I think interpreting is a great career for anyone or for someone looking for a change in careers or a second career. Not only do you benefit but, at the same time, you are providing a much needed service by allowing a non English speaker to communicate with someone else in their own language. It is truly rewarding and not a day has gone by that someone doesn’t tell me how much they appreciate what I am doing for them. I think that’s wonderful and I love my job and look forward to starting everyday. Not many careers can say this."

"It is a wonderful job. You can work at home so you don’t use gas money to get to work. You don’t have to purchase special clothing. It is always exciting because you don’t know what your next call will be like. You do have to provide customer service, but this involves no selling or collecting. You can see how you can help people and how much they appreciate that you are there to assist them. The window of schedules is open and you can choose what works best for you."

"It is an enriching experience. I never knew until now how many people need the help of an interpreter. I feel honored and privileged to help others. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this company and also a part of an excellent group of Managers, Supervisors and all LLS personnel."

"It is a challenging job. Every call is different and with unexpected events or outcomes. Every day provides a learning and development opportunity. It is rewarding to help other people even if you don't know who they are."

"I get to work with customer service, which I love. I can improve my English, and Spanish skills. Best of all, I do it all from home where I can see my baby during my breaks. What is not to love!"
