This web-based training program is comprised of the same 40-hour content of the traditional Advanced Medical Training for interpreters, including 10 hours of live Instructor-Led Sessions over the phone. 

The convenience of the self-paced training modality eliminates the constraints of time and place to enable participants to access the training from any location, at any time.  The web-based curriculum is presented in a user-friendly format with easy navigation and skilled technical support. 

Trainers in the Instructor-Led Sessions each have an average of 20 years of experience, which they skillfully use to facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences in a shared learning environment.  In addition, self-assessment tools enable participants to focus on their individual areas for improvement.


The medical portion includes:
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Medical specialties
  • Healthcare practices
  • Diagnostic procedures and testing
  • Pathology and treatment

The interpreting portion covers:
  • Ethics
  • Linguistic challenges
  • Sight translation
  • Cultural competence

Upon completion of the training, participants can receive 10 Continuing Education Points (CEPs) from the American Translators Association.

Advanced Medical Training for Interpreters (for medical interpreters):


This course is a 40-hour training program comprised of three components, each of which can be taken individually or combined to meet your individual needs. 

The three components are as follows:
  • "The Profession in Review" examines the way in which the profession of healthcare interpreting has developed over time and defines the roles and responsibilities of the medical interpreter as they exist today. It also covers basic interpreting skills, protocols and ethics and involves the participants in exercises and role-plays to put those skills and knowledge into practice.
  • "The Profession in Action" enters into greater detail about the U.S. healthcare system and the biomedical culture within which the provider, LEP patient interact. It examines the particular characteristics of various healthcare settings, professions and specialties, as well as the specialized terminology and procedures utilized within them.  Participants will gain a deeper understanding of culture and its impact on health care as role-play scenarios provide them with the opportunity to refine their cultural competence.
  • "Professional Development in Progress" is the component that addresses the challenges and complex issues encountered by more advanced medical interpreters.  More advanced terminology and complex procedures are examined in detail, as well as challenging aspects of the profession, such as linguistic equivalence and ethical dilemmas.  This component will also cover additional resources that are available to the professional medical interpreter.

Fundamentals of Interpreting Training (for bilingual staff and new interpreters):


This course is designed to introduce individuals to the challenging field of interpreting. Participants will examine numerous interpretation settings, protocols and techniques.  They will also have the opportunity to practice and refine the skills needed for accurate and complete interpretation.

Rate of speech, pronunciation, and professional demeanor will also be discussed along with the following topics:
  • Interpreter protocols
  • Attentive listening
  • Dual-tasking
  • Short-term memory exercises
  • Note-taking and role-playing
  • Presentation and delivery
