"Filling a Language Need"
Monterey County Herald, Marie Vasari, 09/06/07
The headquarters of Language Line Services is tucked away in a Monterey business park, neatly out of sight to the outside world. But that outside world is always in the sights of the company.
Language Line Services, founded 24 years ago as a volunteer service to bridge communications between Vietnamese immigrants and law enforcement officials, has its finger on a global pulse. These days, that pulse is stronger than ever.
The company has launched a widespread recruitment campaign, with the goal of doubling its interpreter workforce during the next two years. Those are no small numbers. Language Line Services already employs close to 3,000 interpreters at call centers and in home offices around the world. Only a small percentage of that workforce — about 200 interpreters — work at the Ryan Ranch office complex, but its clients extend across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
