From Charitable Organisation to the Largest Interpreting Company in the World
LanguageLine’s UK operation is part of the worldwide LanguageLine Solutions group with global headquarters in California and European headquarters in London. The UK business was first established as a charitable project in April 1990 by the late Lord Young of Dartington, founder of the Open University and the Consumers’ Association.
Telephone interpreting was initially developed as an innovative solution to enable organisations to communicate effectively with everyone, regardless of their language. Initially covering just four languages, LanguageLine Solutions was first set up to enable communication between patients and staff at the Royal London Hospital in East London. The local police force soon requested 24 hour coverage in 16 languages – and so the evolution began!
LanguageLine Solutions telephone interpreting and translation services grew rapidly throughout the 1990s, introducing a market-leading face-to-face interpreting service to its range of solutions. The company now forms part of the world’s largest interpreting organisation providing services in over 200 languages.
On September 16, 2016, LanguageLine Solutions was acquired by Teleperformance, the worldwide leader in outsourced omnichannel customer experience management. Teleperformance has stated that LanguageLine will continue to operate as a stand-alone business.
LanguageLine Solutions continues its focus on quality, setting industry standards, and continued innovation. This is exemplified by the introduction of a unique, on-demand video interpreting service – now available across the UK.
You can rely on LanguageLine Solutions to provide the highest quality Interpreters and translators for you and those that you support at any time.
