      PROMOTING POSITIVE & SUSTAINABLE CHANGE

      LanguageLine Gives Back

A man holds up a LanguageLine Gives Back shirt

Proudly Giving Back To Our Communities

LanguageLine employees regularly participate in events that support the communities in which we operate. Our team members create positive change through both corporate volunteering opportunities sponsored by LanguageLine, in addition to activities carried out personally by individuals. Our team members enthusiastically apply their skills and talent to help causes, projects and not-for-profit organisations.

Our efforts for positive and sustainable change are focused on the following high-impact areas: protecting the environment, reducing socio-economic disparities, improving physical health, supporting communal access to opportunities, and enhancing access to mental health/wellbeing support.

Volunteer Photographer for Teenage Cancer Trust

Capturing the Positivity of the Day at the Royal Parks Half Marathon

Recently, LanguageLine’s Rufus Ho volunteered as a photographer for the Teenage Cancer Trust at the Royal Parks Half Marathon in London. Surrounded by the energy of runners and the cheers of fellow volunteers, it was a day filled with positivity and good will. Using their sports photography skills, Rufus captured the excitement and determination of those running for a great cause.

The charity was thrilled with the photos, which perfectly reflected the uplifting spirit of the event. “It was such a positive experience,” Rufus said. “Everyone was so friendly, and it felt amazing to contribute to something so meaningful.”

      LanguageLine Gives Back

Volunteering Time for Local Hedgehog Rescue

LanguageLine’s Alison Vaughan spent two days volunteering with a local hedgehog rescue centre, Shelley Hedgehogs in West Yorkshire, dedicating 16 hours to caring for more than 50 hedgehogs in need. Her days were filled with feeding, weighing, cleaning hutches, and giving medication - all part of helping these sick or injured creatures recover and prepare for release back into the wild.

“It was the best thing ever getting up close to them,” Alison shared. Having discovered a real passion for wildlife care, Alison now fosters hedgehogs at home and plans to keep volunteering through the winter. “Volunteering is such a rewarding way to learn new skills while helping those who can’t help themselves,” she said.

      Sorting Donations, Spreading Kindness

Vicki Volunteers at Her Local British Red Cross Charity Shop

During July, LanguageLine’s Vicki Burns spent two days volunteering at her local British Red Cross charity shop, dedicating 14 hours to sorting, cleaning, and preparing donated items for sale.

Working alongside an amazing team of volunteers, including one aged 94, she helped transform a mountain of donations into ready-to-sell treasures, raising funds for people in need across the world. “It was such a fun and eye-opening experience,” Vicki said. “I loved seeing the difference we made together. I’d recommend volunteering to anyone — it’s so rewarding and a great way to give back to your community.”

      Testing the Waters for Change

Anne Joins the Great UK WaterBlitz to Help Monitor Water Quality

One Saturday in May, LanguageLine’s Anne Denney took part in the UK-wide Great WaterBlitz campaign, contributing to vital research on the health of the nation’s rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds.

Using a simple testing kit near her home in Bishopbriggs, she collected and analysed water samples to check for E. coli levels as part of a national snapshot of water quality.

“Anyone can be a citizen scientist,” Anne said. “It’s all very self-explanatory when the kit arrives.” The results help build a clearer picture of the UK’s waterways and support efforts to protect our natural environment.

      Inspiring the Next Generation

      Empowering Young Leaders Through Mentorship

LanguageLine’s Fatema Khanom spent a weekend volunteering with the Muslim Community Association at a residential youth retreat held at the Markfield Institute of Higher Education in Leicester. Over two and a half days, she delivered a talk on leadership, joined a guest panel, and mentored young Muslim girls to help build their confidence and aspirations. Fatema shared her own journey and encouraged open conversations about personal growth, resilience, and self-belief.

“Fatema’s professionalism, warmth, and commitment to youth development were evident in all her interactions,” said Dilowar Khan, Executive Director of the Association.

Reflecting on the experience, Fatema said, “The experience reaffirmed my belief in the importance of representation and community-led initiatives in empowering the next generation.”
      Muddy Boots and Meaningful Work

Restoring Moorland with the National Trust in Marsden

For his first day of volunteering, Richard spent a day with the National Trust, taking part in a local conservation project to protect and regenerate the moorland in Marsden and the surrounding areas.

His work involved planting sphagnum moss in deep peat, an effort that helps boost biodiversity, reduce flooding, and prevent wildfires.

“I'm grateful to have met such a passionate group of people who give their time to preserve our beautiful natural landscapes,” Richard said. “I’d highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys being outdoors...and doesn’t mind getting a bit muddy!”

Cheering Walkers to the Finish Line

Madeline supports Kidney Research UK at their first Liverpool Bridges Walk

LanguageLine’s Madeline Friend spent her volunteering day helping Kidney Research UK at their first-ever Liverpool Bridges Walk, an event that raised over £30,000 to fight kidney disease.

From registering walkers and giving directions to handing out medals and cheering on finishers, Madeline played an active role in keeping the day running smoothly. “It was inspiring to meet so many participants and hear their stories,” she said. “The atmosphere was full of positivity and community spirit.” Madeline even had the chance to use some British Sign Language with one of the walkers. “It was a really rewarding experience,” she added, “and I’d happily recommend it to anyone looking to give back.”

      Opening Doors to History

Tomas Volunteers at St Anne’s Church for London’s Open House Festival

In mid September, Tomas Sordo Fuente spent a day volunteering as a steward at St Anne’s Church in Limehouse during the Open House Festival. The festival is a unique event that lets the public explore buildings normally closed to visitors.

Welcoming guests, keeping records, and helping in the small church shop, Tomas ensured everything ran smoothly while sharing his enthusiasm for the site’s striking architecture.

“I’ve always loved the festival as a visitor, so it was wonderful to be part of making it happen,” he said. The experience deepened his appreciation for the passion and hard work that go into preserving historic buildings and keeping them open to the community.

      Gardening for Good

Team brighten outdoor spaces at St George’s Hospital

A group of LanguageLine colleagues, including Seema Parmar, Nick Marshall, Anna Paduchowska, Jessica Ribeiro and Jeannine Ruddock, spent the day volunteering at St George’s Hospital in the grounds. The outdoor spaces they worked on are mainly used by staff in the breast cancer unit, offering a calm place to relax and recharge. The team helped to refresh them through general maintenance and weeding.

It was a rewarding way to make a real, visible difference to an important community space. “It felt great to give back to our local community and know our efforts will be appreciated,” Seema said. “I even learnt how to tell a weed from a plant…something that might help in my own garden!”

Seeing the World Through New Eyes

Volunteering With the Middlesex Association for the Blind

LanguageLine’s Nadia Pintea spent her volunteering day with the Middlesex Association for the Blind, supporting clients with visual impairments. Her tasks included accompanying a client safely to and from the club, preparing refreshments, and joining in social activities such as music, sensory games, and storytelling. “It was a truly eye-opening experience,” Nadia said. “Despite their challenges, everyone radiated positivity and gratitude. Their smiles and thank-yous made every moment worthwhile.”

The experience deepened Nadia’s empathy and appreciation for everyday abilities, while giving her new skills in supporting and communicating with people with visual impairments. “It reminded me how even small acts of kindness can have a big impact,” she added.

      Clearing the Way for Play

LanguageLine volunteers lend a hand at Birmingham Play Care

Colleagues Gurdeep Singh, Ross Midgley-Robinson, Anna Toth, Zoe Mitchelson, and Mark Pugh spent a rewarding day volunteering at Birmingham Play Care. The charity provides safe, inclusive spaces for local children to get creative and families to get support.

The team rolled up their sleeves to clear litter and garden debris from outdoor spaces, improving accessibility after recent bad weather. “It felt great to do something productive for the community and spend time with colleagues,” Gurdeep said. Ross added, “It was inspiring to see the difference the staff and volunteers make every day.” The team left smiling, proud of their contribution, and having already signed up for another project with the charity in the coming months!

      Wrapping Up Warmth for Winter

      London’s largest coat collection

Flavia D’Annunzio and Monika Mehesova spent a Saturday volunteering with WrapUp London, helping to sort and prepare donated coats, jackets, gloves, and hats for people in need. The pair checked items for quality and size, organised them by gender, and packed them for distribution, even slipping in small cards with warm, encouraging messages for recipients. “It was an incredibly rewarding experience,” Flavia said. “We worked alongside a friendly team and felt proud to contribute to such a meaningful cause.”

Now in its 15th year, WrapUp London supports over 90 frontline charities each winter. Last year the charity gathered over 15,000 coats for donation, proving that, as temperatures drop, one person’s coat can make a life-changing difference.

LLS Social Value Events and Activities

Discover the Social Value Delivered by LLS

      St George Hospital

As part of our Social Value commitments, we empower our team to give back to the communities where we live and work.

In December, our amazing team members - Charisse, Melissa, Jeannine, Seema, Jessica, Marzia, Emma and Tomas - volunteered to spend a day together wrapping Christmas presents for paediatric patients at St George's Hospital Charity.

Jessica said of her experience "It was a rewarding experience that highlighted how many children rely on the hospital's care during the festive season. Giving back to a place that has supported me over the years felt meaningful, and I'd gladly do it again next year - it was fun and the time flew by!"

A small act of kindness can make a world of difference.

Raising money for the London Ambulance Charity
An intrepid team of 12 from LanguageLine Solutions took on the challenge of climbing The O2 in London to raise funds for the London Ambulance Charity — raising an incredible £1,910 in the process. Our interpreters support the London Ambulance Service’s vital work every day, and this time it was the operations and sales teams’ turn to give something back. “It was equal parts thrilling and nerve-wracking,” one climber shared, “but we were so proud to support the people who dedicate their lives to helping others.” The funds raised will go towards health and wellbeing initiatives that help London Ambulance Service staff and volunteers manage stress and stay resilient.
      Diwali

As Thanksgiving winds down and the countdown to Christmas begins, we find ourselves reflecting on how quickly this year has flown by!

Just a few weeks ago, LanguageLine’s very own Anne Denny, Client Account Manager, had the wonderful opportunity to visit our valued customer Roda Bird, Interim Equality & Diversity Manager, at NHS Grampian. To Anne’s delight, her visit coincided with vibrant Diwali celebrations, and she was warmly invited to join in the festivities. Anne couldn’t resist trying on a beautiful sari—even braving the chilly weather in Northeast Scotland to embrace the spirit of the occasion!

It’s moments like these that highlight the joy of connecting cultures and celebrating diversity. Thank you, Roda and the team at NHS Grampian, for making this such a memorable experience!

      Fazakerley Bluebell Wood
LanguageLine Gives Back forms part of our Social Value commitments, enabling LanguageLine employees to regularly participate in events that support the communities in which we operate.

This week members of the team volunteered to spend a day at Aintree’s Fazakerley Bluebell Wood, helping to clear invasive species from the green space connected to Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Aintree’s Fazakerley Bluebell Wood, which is one of the NHS Forest alliance sites, is a substantial, well-established woodland with over 1,000 trees and countless bluebells that transform the ground into a blue haze every April. The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare’s Nature Recovery Ranger is helping community volunteers look after the wood and encouraging people to explore this grand and peaceful natural retreat for the benefit of their physical health and mental wellbeing.

Our Volunteers, Dave Panther , Madeline Friend and Anne Denny all enjoyed a rewarding (and tiring!) day, spent in this stunning outdoor setting, learning about sustainability in the woodland, supporting the organisation and spending some welcome time with colleagues. An amazing contribution, thank you and well done!

A sunny August day, a wonderful team, and a meaningful cause! Our LanguageLine volunteers Felix Ustorf, Rebecca Turner, Marzia Pinelli, David Elgar and Anna Paduchowska recently swapped their desks for garden tools at St. George Hospital. Together, they rolled up their sleeves to help refresh the hospital's green spaces, tidying up the garden behind the Education Centre as well as clearing all the weeds out the front, making a real difference to those using the building.

It was a rewarding day filled with hard work, laughter, and connection, proving that small acts of kindness can make a big difference. We’re grateful for the opportunity to give back to the communities we serve and strengthen our bonds as a team.
      BSL and Beyond
LanguageLine colleagues took part in an interactive sensory awareness training session led by the incredible Susan Craney and Roger Hewitt, distinguished advocates and prominent ambassadors for the Deaf Community.

The training was fascinating and engaging, and as you’ll see from the photo, a lot of fun! Susan and Roger shared with us the daily challenges faced by the Deaf Community, shedding light on the vast spectrum of deafness (did you know there are more than 26 different medical terms for deafness?), and enlightening us about the simple yet impactful ways to enhance communication, including the importance of lighting and ‘visual noise’.

British Sign Language (BSL) took centre stage, with discussions on its history and grammatical structure. And that's not all – Susan and Roger even equipped us with BSL fingerspelling and some essential vocabulary, along with some pro tips to navigate without any communication hiccups!
The LanguageLine team volunteer their time

In December, three members of the LanguageLine team  Rebecca Turner, Seema Parmar and Jessica Aguilera Maldonado spent the day at St George’s Hospital. Our volunteers were kept busy all day, wrapping Christmas Presents that were destined for the children staying on the Paediatric ward.

It looks like the team could secretly be elves in their spare time – look how beautifully wrapped all those presents are!

LangaugeLine employees connect with linguist at Career Fair
Melissa Rosmade and Ophélie Guenaud represented LanguageLine Solutions at the 8th Careers Fair hosted by the University of Surrey’s Centre for Translation Studies.

The event provided a valuable platform for students to network, present their skills, and for Language Service Providers to showcase their opportunities.

Melissa Rosmade, Translation Operations Team Leader:
"It was an honour to meet the next generation of linguists and project managers. We connected with some truly inspiring individuals."

      Ophélie Guenaud, Junior Project Manager:
"As an alumna, it was wonderful to return to the University of Surrey to discuss our project management internship programme and connect with students and former tutors."
LanguageLine Gives back to the NHS. Charity Run
Nico completed the Battersea Run Through Half Marathon raising 250GBP in the process. "I ran for St. George's because of the life-saving work they do, and now more than ever we need to show our support for the NHS."
St Georges cake bake. LanguageLine team members bakes cakes, buy them and eat them for Charity

Here at LanguageLine Solutions, we don't really need an excuse to eat cake. However, we do love an extra reason to do so...especially when it involves raising money for St George's University Hospital!

In October, ten members of the team volunteered to contribute to our Charity Cake Bake. There were some spectacular offerings from our bakers from brownie to cheesecake, and even Cookie Monster cupcakes!
A fantastic effort from all our bakers and cake-eaters alike, getting together to support a very worthy cause.

      Gardening volunteering

During the summer, members of the LanguageLine team volunteered to spend a rewarding (and tiring!) day working in the hospital gardens at St George's University Hospital.

The volunteers enjoyed a range of activities, including weeding and litter picking, harvesting vegetables from the Dementia Garden and picking lavender to go into the lavender bags for cancer patients.

It was a great day for a great cause, and our volunteers were even blessed with a sunny day!
