      Types of Interpretation with LLAI

      Machine Only (AI)

      What is it? LLAI listens, interprets, and speaks back—no human interpreter involved.

      Scenario: Appropriate for short, low-risk calls such as appointment reminders.

      Keep in mind that while this is the lowest cost interpreting option, AI may miss idioms, emotion, and cultural nuance.

      Types of Interpretation with LLAI

      Hybrid (Machine + Human)

      What is it? English-speaking user starts the call with LLAI and joins a human interpreter if the call increases in complexity or risk.

      Scenario: A receptionist using LLAI for a routine appointment-setting call encounters questions from the person with limited English proficiency regarding chest pain. The receptionist immediately escalates the call to a live interpreter.

      What is it? A live LanguageLine Certified Interpreter manages the entire exchange, matching tone and culture from the first word.

      Scenario: A mental health check in which misunderstandings cannot be tolerated due to the high-stakes nature of the interaction.

      Keep in mind that human interpretation results in the highest accuracy, empathy, and compliance—which is essential whenever a misunderstanding could cause legal exposure, loss of trust, or patient harm.

      Secure and Responsible by Design

      LanguageLine AI (LLAI) is designed for routine, low-risk conversations and built within the same secure technology environment that supports our enterprise interpreting services.

      • Built on infrastructure developed using secure development practices
      • Core interpreting platform certified to ISO 27001 and audited annually under SOC 2 Type II (covering OPI and VRI services)
      • LLAI follows the same governance, privacy, and security design principles used across our interpreting services
      • Developed in alignment with established security controls, though not yet included in current external audit scopes
      • ISO/IEC 42001 certification (AI management systems) in final stages pending issuance
      • Anticipated inclusion of LLAI in applicable certification and audit scopes as the platform matures

      AI Interpreting Services FAQs

      AI interpretation services use automated technology to interpret spoken language in real time. LanguageLine Automated Interpreter (LLAI) listens, detects the language being spoken, and delivers natural, back-and-forth consecutive interpretation for routine, low-risk conversations. 

      LLAI is cloud-based and IVR-compatible. An English-speaking user dials a toll-free number, a pre-call message sets expectations in the target language, and LLAI provides consecutive interpretation during the conversation. 

      You can connect to a live interpreter at any time by pressing “0” or using a trigger phrase such as “I need a live interpreter.” LLAI can also detect when a human interpreter may be needed and offer a seamless connection. 

      LLAI is built within the same secure technology environment that supports LanguageLine’s enterprise interpreting services and follows secure development practices. The core interpreting platform is certified to ISO 27001 and audited annually under SOC 2 Type II (covering OPI and VRI services), and ISO/IEC 42001 is in final stages pending issuance. 

      LLAI is currently available through a limited pilot program. Organizations can submit the interest form to be considered; submitting the form does not guarantee enrollment in the pilot.
